Emotions Foundation

Organisation Profile

Emotions Foundation’s mission is to make a global impact on mental health by bolstering social-emotional learning (SEL) for children, parents, and teachers. They have developed and deployed an AI-driven counselling solution in Rwanda.

What type of products are you working on?

An AI voice bot for mental health and well-being where children initiate a conversation by calling a designated WhatsApp number, where they interact with an AI bot.

The product utilises speech-to-text technology, before passing the text through ChatGPT to generate answers. The responses are then passed through text-to-speech technology to be read aloud to children. This allows children to have conversations with the bot.

What has surprised you about using AI for education?

The scalability, ease of adoption, and students’ openness to the tools not yet being perfected. Additionally, we could see significant impact on students in areas that have not been prioritised, such as mental health.

Where have you seen the biggest impact for teachers/ students?

The biggest impact has been that African students/ learners/ users have access to a tool that they never have had access to before. With this, their mental well-being improved, and in turn, their readiness to learn.

What are you hoping can be achieved through collaboration with the community?

Mental health is such a critical part of life, including being part of communities. We are hopeful that communities will be strengthened by our solutions.

How can a community help you?

Although a voice bot is useful, it cannot address all mental health-related challenges. A community can help us scale our solutions into areas including psychological help.

Finally, we need advocacy to influence governments, funders and the corporate giants like Google, Meta, etc. Companies determine so much of what is and is not possible in AI and can stamp out our initiatives like a giant stepping on ants when they roll out new products and updates that impact upon and have the potential to make our work obsolete.

What are the biggest challenges you are currently facing?

The biggest challenge has been ensuring the accuracy and validation of data and facts of ChatGPT’s outputs. Another challenge is how to design prompts to limit answers outputted to match what we require.

Learning By Doing

We are providing small grants to support the development of AI products & components in LMICs. We know that innovation investment is high-risk. Our aim is that our community can benefit from the lessons learned in these pilots – what works and what doesn’t.

Learn more about our pilot projects here. We will be following each project and reporting on key learnings.
